Your O-1 petition needs to prove extraordinary ability, and few things do that like a well-built press portfolio. But most applicants build theirs backwards: they collect whatever mentions they can find, then ask their attorney if it's enough. It usually isn't.

Here's how we think about it when we build portfolios for clients.

Start with the story, not the outlets. Before a single pitch goes out, you need a clear narrative: what did you accomplish, why does it matter, and why would a journalist care? Officers see hundreds of petitions. A portfolio with a coherent story — a through-line across every feature — reads as a career. A pile of disconnected mentions reads as a checklist.

Depth beats volume, every time. One substantive feature — a real journalist, a real story about your work, in a publication with a verifiable audience — carries more weight than ten directory listings and blog mentions. We tell clients to stop counting clips and start asking of each one: would this impress someone who has never heard of me?

Document everything like a lawyer will read it. Because one will. For every feature, keep the live URL, the publication's background, and independent audience statistics. Attorneys typically look for 50,000+ in verified viewership, and they need third-party traffic data — not the outlet's own claims. A portfolio without documentation is just a list of links.

Earned, not bought. This is the line that matters most. Sponsored posts and pay-to-play features are advertising, and adjudicators can tell the difference between a paid slot and a story a journalist chose to write. Everything in your portfolio should be editorial coverage someone decided you deserved.

Time it like a campaign, not a scramble. Real press takes lead time — finding the angle, pitching, editorial review, publication. If your filing is 3–6 months out, you're in the ideal window. Start now and your portfolio arrives as a finished body of work, not a last-minute scramble.

Building a portfolio is a craft: part strategy, part storytelling, part media relationships. Done right, it's the section of your petition your attorney worries about least.
