"Published material about you" is one of the most cited — and most misunderstood — O-1 criteria. Here's what it actually requires, based on years of building press portfolios that hold up under review.
It has to be about you. This sounds obvious, but it rules out more than you'd think. A quote from you in an article about your industry is not published material about you. An event listing with your name on it isn't either. The piece needs to be substantively about you and your work — your accomplishments, your contributions, your story.
It has to be real media. Professional or major media means publications with genuine audiences and editorial standards. Officers look for verifiable readership — attorneys generally want to see 50,000+ in independent traffic data — and a real editorial process behind the piece. A blog with no audience and no editor doesn't clear the bar, no matter how flattering the article.
It has to be earned. This is where most weak portfolios fail. Self-published posts, sponsored articles, and pay-to-play features are not editorial coverage. Adjudicators review thousands of petitions; they recognize manufactured press quickly, and it doesn't just fail to help — it undermines the credibility of everything around it.
Documentation is part of the evidence. A link alone is thin. Strong published-material evidence includes the live article, background on the publication, and independent third-party audience statistics. We package all of it in a lawyer-ready format, because the attorney assembling your petition shouldn't have to hunt for what an officer will ask about.
One strong feature outweighs a stack of weak ones. We see applicants with twenty mentions and no case, and applicants with two substantive features and a strong one. Quality is the whole game: a real journalist, a real story, a real audience.
If you're not sure whether your existing press counts, that's exactly the conversation to have before you file — not after an RFE asks the question for you.
